It was first founded by the Moors in 1349 and then officially founded in 1531 by the Emperor Carlos V, with support of Pope Clemente VII. The University is home to foreign students from around the world at the University's "Modern Language Centre".

  • The University’s Modern Language Centre (Centro de Lenguas Modernas, CLM) is one of the most prestigious language teaching institutions both in terms of the quality of its facilities and the excellence of its teaching staff. This is confirmed through the recognition of its programs by prestigious educational bodies from around the world. It is located in the central and typically "granadino" district of the "Realejo" and housed in the old palace of Santa Cruz (16th century), which has been specially restored for teaching purposes.
